The alpine, volcanic scenery is the setting of Mordor, in which stands Mt Doom, aka Mt Ngauruhoe. For the entire trilogy, Frodo and Sam are trying to get to Mt Doom in order to destroy the infamous ring.

This track takes you to the summit of Mount Ngauruhoe (2291m) via Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It is an intense climb recommended for experienced and well-equipped trampers only. There are some switchbacks across the lower portion of the mountain, but those are only good for coming down, not up. Stick to the boulders and rock formations that will give the best ground to traverse both up and down.

Tongariro Northern Circuit is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. It is a 44.9km loop in the Northern half of Tongariro National Park, typically completed in 3-4 days. My initial intention was to complete the circuit in three days, but due to its popularity and limited spots (accommodation in huts/campsites), I only managed to book one campsite and did it in two strenuous days.

While it is just a part of a much longer circuit (the Tongariro Northern Circuit, a New Zealand Great Walk) which covers much more of the park, the Alpine Crossing affords views of all three volcanoes, four very colorful lakes, volcanic craters, and much more. All in just a day!
